E-Prescribing mandate impact

On Jan. 1, 2020, Iowa law will mandate that prescribers transmit, and pharmacies receive, all prescriptions, including controlled substances, in an electronic format.

After participating in the Nov. 12 webinar presented by the Iowa Pharmacy Association, Mary Jane Carothers of IHCA concludes that that the rule has minimal, if any, effect on skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities or residential care facilities.

“Patients who reside in facilities or group homes where staff members administer medications as a part of the care received are exempt from the electronic prescription mandate. The only exception to this exemption is when a patient is discharged from a care setting to return home,” said Carothers.

“Any discharge medications for home use must be electronically prescribed by the patient’s attending medical provider. Likewise, this e-prescribing rule exemption does not apply to patients receiving care in their own homes,” Carothers continued.
