Member Spotlight: Nadine Donath of Hawkeye Care Center Dubuque

April 16, 2020

Nadine began her career in long-term care by working in the kitchen and now serves as the activities director at Hawkeye Care Center Dubuque. Nadine recently went above and beyond as she tirelessly made Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for her facility. She has made masks, face shields and gowns.

“Nadine is an amazing person and activities director,” said Dani Ettema, administrator of Hawkeye Care Center. Thank you for all you do, Nadine!

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I started working in the kitchen. Shortly after starting, Dani, our administrator, approached me about taking the activity coordinator course. I always felt that it would be a great job that fit my crafty lifestyle.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
What I like most about working in long-term care is the family atmosphere – building relationships with residents and their families, hearing the residents share childhood memories and helping create new memories with their families.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
There are days that are not very glamorous, but the good outshines the bad. For example, when a resident smiles and thanks you for helping them, or when they make a picture for your office.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
Slow down and enjoy life. Don’t take it for granted.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
Spoiling my three grandchildren, fishing, using my embroidery machine and various craft projects.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“Never go to bed mad.”

It is something my mom always told me. Life is short, you never know what is going to happen and don’t leave things unsaid.
