Member Spotlight: Kyla Williams of Family Care Solutions

July 30, 2020

Kyla Williams was introduced to long-term care at a young age when she visited the long-term care facility where her mother worked. As a home health aide at Family Care Solutions, Kyla has developed skills that help her in all areas of her life. She also enjoys the opportunity to meet new people through her role, whether it’s those she cares for, their families or her coworkers.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My mom worked in a long-term care facility throughout the majority of her life. I remember she would always come home and talk about her favorite residents and the people she worked with. My younger brother and I would also frequently visit the residents there while my mom worked.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
My favorite part about working in long-term care is the new people that I get to meet. From the people that I get to take care of and their families, to my coworkers and other staff, everyone is so kind and caring. I have met some incredible individuals while working in long-term care.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
A career in long-term care equips you with a set of communication and social skills that other areas in the health care field may not be able to. Working in long-term care is also great for those who really want to get to know the people that they are caring for because you are able to interact with the same people for longer periods of time.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
One lesson that working in long-term care has taught me is how to adapt to change. I found that being able to quickly adapt to change in my personal life has been a direct result from working in long-term care. Each individual that I work with is unique and special in their own way, therefore being able to quickly adapt in any given situation is essential in providing the best possible care that I can to that individual.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing? When I am not at work, I love reading and will read just about anything! I also enjoy going on walks and hikes at the various state parks around Iowa.

What is your favorite quote and why? My favorite quote is, “Keep going, keep growing.” It reminds me to always keep a positive mindset and to keep moving forward because every step I take and every decision I make has the potential for negative or positive outcomes, and it is up to me whether it allows me to grow as a person or not.
