Member Spotlight: Jill Luttrull of Bickford of Muscatine

November 6, 2020

Jill Luttrull is the kitchen manager and cook at Bickford of Muscatine. She loves the opportunity to build strong relationships with the residents and her coworkers, and sees them as a second family.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My older sister was working in a nursing home and recommended a cook position.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy bringing happiness to the residents with my cooking skills. I like learning and hearing the ways they used to prepare and enjoy the meals together with their families.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
It is a very rewarding job. You build some very strong relationships with residents and coworkers. It is like a second family more than a job.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work? I have learned that not everyone will like what you cook, but that it’s okay because we all come from different areas and backgrounds – that’s what makes us all unique.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with family. I love fall and winter, so bonfires, s’mores and decorating for holidays are my favorite.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“The kitchen is where you put all the ingredients together.” No matter what you do in life, you have a plan and put it together.
