Member Spotlight: Amanda Klein of St. Luke Lutheran Home of St. Luke Homes & Services, Inc.

September 7, 2020

Amanda Klein grew up across the street from a nursing facility as a child and has worked in long-term care since she was 16. As the activity director at St. Luke Homes and Services, Inc., she enjoys learning from the residents and likes that no day is ever the same.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I began working in long-term care when I was 16. I had always lived across from the nursing home and visited there as a child. I remember how kind the residents were and how they always took an interest in me and my stories. I was always very close to my grandparents as well and spent a lot of time with them.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
My favorite part about working in long-term care is the residents. I learn so much from them and no one day is ever the same.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
If you really enjoy the elderly population and want to feel like you are really making a difference, then working in long-term care is for you.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
I have learned a lot from working in long-term care. Patience, flexibility and teamwork are all valuable lessons in any aspect of life. Anything you learn from the residents will help you outside of your workplace. They have had many life experiences they are willing to share with you. Some of the things I have learned include how to properly iron, gardening tips, baking tips and some different handicrafts. One thing that sticks out that I heard from a resident and I apply to my own life is that anytime you want to buy something, sleep on it. If you wake up the next morning and still want it, go buy it and if not, don’t.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
When I am not at work, I enjoy traveling, gardening, baking, scrapbooking, crafting, exercising and watching or attending sporting events.

What is your favorite quote and why?
My favorite quote is, “The world is a book and those who do not travel only read a page.“ This is my favorite because I love to travel and feel that I gain so much with each new destination. I always enjoy sharing my adventures with my residents so it’s as if they’ve traveled with me. They enjoy learning about new places or seeing locations that they visited when they were able to travel.
