Director of Nursing

Position Summary:The overall purpose of Director of Nursing position is to direct the provision of nursing services to facility residents. The Director of Nursing oversees the development and implementation of resident care plans and assures the provision of the best available quality of care for facility residents.

Functional Accountabilities:
The following represents the essential functions of this job to be used to determine if an individual with a physical or mental impairment can perform these functions with or without reasonable accommodation. The other functions listed maybe required of all other staff in the position.

Essential Functions:
1. Oversees, directs, coordinates nursing staff to provide proper resident care consistent with standard nursing practices
2. Develops and establishes nursing service objectives and standards of practice.
3. Develops and establishes the care plan of each resident.
4. Writes nursing assessments and reassessments.
5. Heads the care plan conference of participating disciplines, residents and resident’s families.
6. Assures provision of appropriate medications, treatments and nursing services according to care plans and physician’s instructions.
7. Monitors and controls inventories of drugs and supplies.
8. Orders drugs and supplies.
9. Monitors medical and form inventories to assure adequate supply levels.
10. Assures compliance with state and federal regulations and Board standards.
11. Operates nursing department within budgetary guidelines as appropriate.
12. Recruits, hires, orients, trains, monitors, develops qualified staff.
13. Monitors and observes staff performance relating to resident care.
14. Evaluate performance, skills, job knowledge of nursing staff.
15. Coordinates staff schedules according to facility needs.

Other Functions:
1. Coordinates services with the interdisciplinary team.
2. May prepare, type correspondence, reports, other documentation for the nursing department.
3. Establishes and maintains a library of resources books and professional journals.
4. Assists new staff in establishing, developing peer relations and support.
5. Other duties as assigned by management.

Dimension and Scope:
1. Functions with extensive latitude in the direction of the facility’s nursing services.
2. Assumes responsibility, authority for decisions regarding all aspects of nursing care but may consult with the administrator.

3. Professional contacts are numerous and somewhat diverse and may include physicians and other medical professionals, facility staff, residents, families, state and federal regulatory personnel, internal consultants and others.
Physical Requirements Base on Essential Functions:
1. Frequently lifts, stands, transfers residents weighing 75-250 pounds
2. Frequently pushes/pulls residents weighing 75-250 pounds in wheelchair and geri chairs
3. Frequently stoops, bends, walks and stands for extended periods of time.
4. Frequently lifts and carries equipment, supplies and laundry weighing less than 50 pounds.
5. Frequently pushes/pulls objects weighing less than 100 pounds.
6. Occasionally climbs stairs.
7. Occasionally reaches at or above shoulder height.
8. Visual acuity and ability to write legibly is required.

Typical Knowledge and Skills:
1. A current, valid registration/certification as and RN is required.
2. Exposure to gerontology is desirable.
3. Experience in nursing in a long-term care setting is preferred.
4. Management/supervisory experience is necessary.
5. Highly developed communications and interpersonal skills are needed.
6. Functional literacy in English is required.
7. Computer literacy is required.
