Member Spotlight: Elyse Schroeder of Shady Oaks Care Center

Elyse Schroeder comes from a long line of long-term caregivers, so it was fitting when she became a CNA at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City, Iowa. She quickly obtained her CMA certification and is now working to complete her RN degree.

“Elyse has worked hard for her residents and for her education,” said People Development Coordinator Sara Casey.

Additionally, Elyse was awarded the Vetter Foundation Scholarship, which selects individuals who excel in their work and actively live out the mission, vision and values of Shady Oaks Care Center and Vetter Senior Living.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
My mom and grandma worked in long-term care for many years. My sister took a CNA course while in high school and loved it so much. I decided to follow in their footsteps and haven’t looked back.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I love the relationships you build with the residents and knowing you are making a difference in the quality care they receive.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
There are so many benefits to working in long-term care, such as the bonds you create and knowing you not only have the residents’ trust, but also their families’ trust in the quality of care.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
Time management and multitasking.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
You can find me with my family and typically outside. I love to fish, hunt, hike and kayak. We do a lot of these things together as a family.

What is your favorite quote and why?
“There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved.” – George Sand

I always think of this quote when I get down, to know that I am loved by many and have a huge heart.
