Member Spotlight: Gwen Gustafson of Manilla Manor
At the age of 57, Gwen Gustafson entered the long-term care profession as a CNA at Manilla Manor. She enjoys making new friends with all the residents and hearing their stories.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I moved back to my hometown and someone told me they were hiring at Manilla Manor. I applied and was given the opportunity to become a CNA. I was 57 years old.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
Making new friends with all the residents and hearing their stories.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
It’s hard work. It’s not for everyone. But if you have compassion for others, it will grow. It’s very rewarding.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps you outside of work?
Patience. A lot of patience.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
Being outdoors when it’s warm as well as spending time with my cats.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Common sense is not so common.” Because it’s not.
