And we have a winner! NCAL Awards include nurse at The Kensington

The Iowa Center for Assisted Living (ICAL) congratulates Amanda Garcia, RN, Wellness Coordinator (pictured at right) at The Kensington in Fort Madison, on being named the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) Nurse of the Year. Garcia will be recognized at the 69th Annual American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living Convention & Expo in San Diego, CA, held October 7-10.

Garcia was recognized in 2017 with the ICAL Excellence in Long Term Services and Supports Leadership Award for Distinguished Director of Nursing. She currently serves as president of the Iowa Council of Nurse Leaders.

At The Kensington for the past eight years, Garcia has been tireless in furthering her education in long term services and supports and then sharing her knowledge with others. For example, as a Virtual Dementia Tour® facilitator and certified dementia care practitioner, she helped train staff at the local hospital and Iowa State Penitentiary. She also offers training to community groups and Kensington residents’ family members.

A leader in her field, when Iowa created a model of the National POLST (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) Paradigm, Garcia was the first in Lee County to become a facilitator and instructor to help ensure residents’ end-of-life choices were being honored.

In 2017, The Kensington earned the Silver—Achievement in Quality award through the AHCA/NCAL Quality Award Program. Garcia was instrumental in The Kensington’s success in achieving the Silver Award and is now helping guide the organization to apply for the next step, the Gold Award.

“We could not be more proud of Amanda’s commitment to long term services and supports and the residents, families and community she serves,” said Julie Adair, ICAL Vice President of Workforce. “At the local, state and national level, she is setting an exemplary course for a successful and rewarding nursing career in the assisted living profession.”

She was one of four providers/programs recognized as 2018 NCAL Award recipients.
