          Infection Control and Antibiotic Stewardship

The new Requirements of Participation now require that all nursing facilities have Antibiotic Stewardship and Infection Control programs in place. This two-part session will begin with a review of a comprehensive approach to a facility-based infection prevention program, including tips and clinical advice for successful implementation. The second part of this session will offer a practical approach to prescribing antibiotic therapy and development of antimicrobial stewardship program in long term care settings.

                                   Home Health Regulatory Update and Review

This program will inform attendees on the status of the current Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations and policies that are of greatest concern to home health agencies. Hot topics will include: the HH PPS rate update for 2018, the HHCoPs, Targeted Probe and Educate medical review, and more.  Legislative initiatives to mitigate some of the burdensome regulations will also be discussed.  During this session, an opportunity will be provided for attendees to discuss the challenges that they are facing and strategies for success.

                                 CPR Policies and Procedures and Staff Education for SNFs and ALs

This session will review CPR/DNR policies to ensure they are consistent with the CMS guidance. Discussion will focus on a facilities obligation to provide CPR consistent with a residents’ advance directives and the proper training for staff on those policies and procedures and how often training should be provided.

                                   DHS Director’s View on MCOs and Other Issues Facing LTC Providers

The new Director of the Iowa Department of Human Services, Jerry Foxhoven, will discuss the departments current policy for long term care, assisted living and home health care and the direction that future policies will likely go.  Jerry will review the important issues that DHS faces on long term care policy and issues.                                     Medication Management in Long Term Care

The routine use of high risk drugs among the frail elderly population found in today’s long term care facilities poses significant medical risk for residents and significant regulatory risk for providers.  This session will cover current best practices in the delivery of high risk drugs and proper medication management practices and procedures.

The presentation will discuss contractual, regulatory and other legal issues related to MCO and provider relationships.  There will also be a discussion on the status of the Request for Declaratory Ruling on the definition of “Maintenance and Restorative Care.”
